Federal Update for February 3, 2011

In a press release issued earlier this week, Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Dan Inouye (D-HI) announced that the committee will adopt a moratorium on earmarks for FY2011 and FY2012.  The announcement reads, in part:

"The Appropriations Committee will thoroughly review its earmark policy to ensure that every member has a precise definition of what constitutes an earmark. To that end, we will send each member a letter with the interpretation of Rule XLIV (44) that will be used by the Committee. If any member submits a request that is an earmark as defined by that rule, we will respectfully return the request."

Earlier in January, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released a publication which explains many of the tax tools that may be available for education and how to treat them for tax filing purposes.   The document is available at the following address:  http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p970.pdf
